Pediatric Dentists: What’s so special?

Finding a Family Dentist for You and Your Children

To ensure a healthy smile for your child in the future, it’s important to get them to the dentist at an early age. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children have their first dental check-up by their first birthday.

Do all dentists work on children?

Not every dentist is comfortable working on children. Most parents choose a family or pediatric dentist to take their kids to. It’s important to find the right kids’ dentist for your Centennial family, because not all dentists will work with children.

Why not?

Because pediatric dentistry is different than adult care. If your child is nervous or apprehensive about dental care, this poses an additional challenge for general dental care providers. You need a dentist who has the techniques and skills to address the added challenges that young patients can present and genuinely enjoys kids.

What is the Difference Between Working with Children and Adults?

Working with children is much different than working with adults. For one, your child will need a dentist that is patient, friendly and is able to communicate with your child in a way that is not intimidating.

Children’s teeth are also quite different anatomically than permanent adult teeth. They require different types of restorative and preventive care.

For example, primary teeth decay at a rapid rate compared to cavities in permanent teeth. If the decay is severe, the type of restoration (such as a crown) or preventive therapy (such as a space maintainer) requires a certain level of experience and equipment to complete.

Rather than completing care for your child, a general dentist may simply refer you to a Centennial pediatric dentist, like Dr. Kathleen Young.

Finding the right family dentist means you can enjoy benefits like:

  • A place where your children feel relaxed and welcome
  • All of your family’s oral health needs being met in one location
  • Convenient scheduling opportunities for busy families
  • Creating a positive outlook in your child toward future dental care
