What To Expect At Your Child’s First Dental Visit

pediatric dentist centennial COYour smile is with you forever, so it’s important that you take proper care of it, right from the beginning.  If you’re looking for the best start for your child’s smile, then look no further than Young Family and Cosmetic Dentistry.  At our Centennial, Colorado office, our friendly staff will help your child have a positive first visit to encourage a favorable outlook toward future dental care.

A “Fun” Appointment

Dr. Young recommends that patients come by for an evaluation before their first birthday or within six months of getting their first tooth.  Typically, we wait until our young patients are two years old before we polish their teeth or take any x-rays, depending on how cooperative they are.  For small children, it’s more important that they are comfortable here and that we establish a fun, positive relationship with them.

Counting Teeth

Instead of polishing, we’ll examine their teeth, which we often call “counting teeth”, as we brush them with a bit of fluoride.  A first visit often centers around an office tour, to make your child familiar with our practice and comfortable here.  We encourage our young patients to climb up in the dental chair (or sit in your lap, if they prefer) and explore the tools that we use such as the air and water sprayer.

At this visit we also …

  • Thoroughly examine the teeth that have erupted, to be sure that they’re healthy and cavity-free. Dr. Young also checks the gums and mouth for abnormalities or signs of infection.
  • Check your child’s bite, to ensure that the teeth fit together as they should – we want to be sure that permanent teeth have sufficient room.
  • Take dental x-rays (“pictures”) to detect tooth decay and observe the position of teeth and roots.
  • Look for possible concerns caused by thumb-sucking, pacifiers, bedtime bottles, etc.

When the exam is complete, we’ll discuss your child’s existing dental condition with you, suggest any needed treatments and address any questions or concerns you might have. We’ll also walk you through how to properly care for and clean your child’s teeth.
